Ratan Tata, known for his philanthropic work and his numerous contributions to the world, was one of the most revered figures in the nation and around the world. His generosity, leadership, and humble demeanour won him hearts across generations. Widely adored, his legacy as a businessman and philanthropist was unmatched. His death in 2024 left a void that the nation mourned deeply. While his life was marked by success and kindness, there was one area where Ratan Tata’s aspirations didn’t succeed -the film industry.

Despite his immense business acumen, Ratan Tata ventured into the industry in the early 2000s with the film Aetbaar (2004). Directed by Vikram Bhatt, Aetbaar was a romantic psychological thriller featuring a star-studded ensemble cast, including Amitabh Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, and John Abraham. The film was inspired by the American movie Fear (1996) and revolved around a father’s desperate attempts to protect his daughter from a psychotic lover. In the film, Amitabh Bachchan portrayed Dr. Ranveer Malhotra, a father determined to save his daughter Ria (played by Bipasha Basu) from the obsessive and dangerous Aryan Trivedi (John Abraham).

However, the film, produced under Ratan Tata’s banner, Tata Infomedia, did not perform well at the box office. Despite high expectations, the film struggled to recover its Rs 9.5 crore budget, earning only Rs 4.25 crore domestically and Rs 7.96 crore worldwide. The film’s failure at the box office marked a rare setback for Ratan Tata. After the flop, he refrained from producing any more films, focusing instead on his business and philanthropic endeavours.

Interestingly, Ratan Tata had several connections within Bollywood. Amrish Puri was one of his close friends, which allegedly began during the time when Ratan Tata was preparing to launch India’s first homegrown car, Tata Indica. There were also rumours of a romantic relationship between Ratan Tata and Simi Garewal.

Another significant connection was with actor Gufi Paintal, who portrayed Shakuni Mama in the iconic 1988 television series Mahabharat. The two met in the 1960s while studying engineering in Jamshedpur and even shared a room in the hostel. He also had a strong bond with Amitabh Bachchan, with whom he collaborated on various humanitarian causes.
