Football tournament: CSJM univ sails into quarterfinal

Kanpur: Amit's splendid goal helped CSJM university Kanpur into quarterfinals of All India Inter university Football championship on Tuesday, vanquishing Yen Poya university, Karnataka in a keenly contested match by 1-0. The two sides remained deadlocked 0-0 in regulation time. Though both squads garnered several opportunities to score, they failed to convert them into goals. During extra time, Centre forward Amit capitalised on an opportunity and netted the decisive goal.
Alongside host Admas University, University of Calicut, Annamalai University, MG Kottayam, Guru Nanak Dev Amritsar, University of Kolkata and IIMT Meerut also advanced to quarter finals. The clash between MG Kottayam was particularly riveting as Kottayam emerged victorious by 2-1 after initially trailing 0-1. Goa commenced the match aggressively, stunning Kottayam with a goal in the opening minute. Kottayam regrouped and equalised just before half time. Subsequently, they notched another goal in the second half to secure victory. In other pre-quarterfinals, Admas University overcame Punjab Uni. Chandigarh 5-2, University of Calicut defeated Kota university 5-1, Annamalai uni. triumphed over Delhi Uni. 3-0, Gurunanak Dev Amritsar defeated National Sports Uni. Manipur 3-0, University of Kolkata edged GNA Phagwara 1-0, IIMT Meerut overwhelmed Joy University 4-0.
