Dr Sunkavalli’s mission: Screening 1 million people for cancer in rural areas
Hyderabad: Dr Chinnababu Sunkavalli, a surgical oncologist and CEO of Grace Cancer Foundation, has successfully completed a mission to screen over one million people across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha. Using six mobile units for onsite testing, Dr Sunkavalli and his dedicated volunteer team are addressing the rising incidence of cancer by promoting early detection and personalised treatment.
"Cancer rates are increasing, making early detection and tailored treatment crucial," Dr Sunkavalli said. Last year, the foundation received an invitation from President Droupadi Murmu's daughter, Itishree Murmu, to send a screening bus to Pahadpur village in Odisha. He highlighted the scarcity of medical oncologists, with just one available for every million people, and pointed out that 70% of patients live in rural areas, while 95% of cancer care centers are located in cities.
Grace Cancer Foundation has been recognised by Limca and Guinness World Records for its efforts, providing free screenings to women and underprivileged communities across more than 300 villages in 130 countries. Dr Sunkavalli emphasised the importance of collaboration among the govt, private, and corporate sectors to improve access to cancer care.
"We have a committed team and support from willing companies," he added. "As cancer incidence grows, so does the need for early detection and customised care," he said.
