The Hubballi Police shot two robbers in their legs as they tried to flee after attacking the police personnel who intercepted them on the outskirts of the city on February 4, 2024. Three others escaped.
The accused who have been shot in their legs are natives of Gujarat and have been identified Dilip and Nitesh.
According to the police, the incident happened on the outskirts of Hubballi on Halyal-Kadapatti Road in the early hours of Tuesday.
Following two cases of robbery on ring road on the night of February 3, 2025, the police had launched a hunt for the gang. On Halyal-Kadapatti Road, when the police tried to stop them for verification, the accused attacked them in a bid to escape.
The police had no choice but to warn them by shooting in the air and then shoot them in the leg in self-defence, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mahaning Nandgavi said.
Sub-Inspector Ashok, police constables Sharanu and Somu Meti have suffered injuries in the attack. Both the robbers and the police personnel are being treated at KMCRI Hospital in Hubballi.
Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar visited the hospital to enquire about their health. The search is on for the remaining three who absconded. According to the police, the accused have been involved in various cases of robbery and theft.
