The authorities will be launching a crackdown on encroachments of lakes and waterbodies in Mandya district.

At a review meeting chaired by Mandya Deputy Commissioner Mr. Kumar on Tuesday, officials were instructed to survey the lakes and submit a report on the extent of encroachment.

Mr. Kumar said 962 lakes in Mandya will be surveyed, and necessary steps will be taken to clear the encroachments. Besides, steps will be taken to ensure that the encroachers are prosecuted as per the law.

He said that GPS mapping would be carried out at the 962 lakes coming under Zilla Panchayat and Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. to ensure that they are not polluted. Besides, signages and notices would be prominently displayed to inform the public not to pollute the water.

In a bid to conserve the waterbodies, lake conservation committees will be constituted at the local level, and a dedicated cell will be set up to handle complaints about water pollution at the district level.

Public awareness rallies will also be taken out throughout the district.
