124 accidents took place in Mizoram in ’24, 112 killed: Police records
Aizawl: At least 124 road accidents occurred in Mizoram in 2024 with 112 people being killed, according to the records maintained by the state police. The statistics were disclosed at an event on the commencement of the ‘road safety month' on Saturday.
Police records said there had been 547 road accidents since 2019 till last year with 467 fatalities which is around 83%. There is a possibility that some vehicular accidents were not recorded by the state police department.
Analysis of reasons of road accidents indicates that around 75% are because of the faults of the drivers like carelessness, while the rest of the causes were due to different reasons, including drink driving, driving on the wrong side and using mobile phone while driving.
The records between 2019 and 2023 indicate that 289 road accidents were registered due to careless driving, causing the deaths of 253 people while drink driving resulted in 85 accidents causing the deaths of 69. At least 44 accidents occurred due to wrong side driving, resulting in 28 deaths and five died in five accidents due to the drivers using cellphones while driving.
Secretary of the state transport department Zosangliana, who inaugurated the road safety month, said the Mizoram Road Safety Council selects ‘Driving with Care and Safety' as the theme of the road safety week this year.
Zosangliana said the number of road accidents and fatalities due to the accidents is extremely high in a small state like Mizoram having only around 11 lakh population. He said huge responsibilities lie on the drivers to avert vehicular accidents and thereby reduce loss of valuable lives.
