New Delhi: A gang that used to steal cars from different areas of Delhi and then sell them in Maharashtra was busted recently. One of its members, Manoj Pal (40), a resident of Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested.
Police said the gang used high-tech equipment and operated in parts. Some members used key configuration devices to connect to the car's socket, generating the electronic key to start the vehicle. Others modified the stolen cars by forging engine and chassis numbers before selling them with forged or counterfeit documents. The gang members mainly used to target posh areas and markets.
Deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara) Prashant Priya Gautam said a car was stolen from Farsh Bazar on Dec 28 and a case was registered. During the inquiry, cops received information about Pal's movement in Anand Vihar. A trap was set at CBD Ground, Shahdara, and the accused was apprehended. He was in a car that was found to be stolen from Madhu Vihar. He was found involved in four criminal cases.
Pal told police that the gang consisted of four members who were actively involved in the theft of four-wheelers. They stole more than 50 luxury cars from Delhi-NCR and delivered them to receivers based in UP and Maharashtra. "His associates, namely Raju, Kala and Amruddin, are still absconding. During the investigation, four SUVs were recovered at the instance of Pal," police said.
Pal previously worked as a truck driver but found the money insufficient to make ends meet. Subsequently, he, along with his three aides, all residents of Moradabad, began stealing four-wheelers.
