The Tamil Nadu government on Monday announced that it would waive ₹48.95 crore in educational loans extended to Adi Dravidar, tribal and Christian Adi Dravidar students.

An official press release said the ‘write-off proposal’ of these educational loans was being considered a special case. Inability to collect repayments from students, unavailability of the records concerned, and inability to identify and locate the students concerned were cited as reasons for the waiver.

The loans were extended to students from these communities between 1972-73 and 2002-03 for pursuing higher education in several disciplines, including medicine and related programmes. The loans were also extended to students from these communities between 2003-04 and 2009-10.
