The ‘Corporation Health and Environment Enforcement Team in Action’ (Cheeta), a project of the Kozhikode Corporation that aims to convert Kozhikode into a total waste-free city by March 31, is making progress with the squad taking action against 453 establishments for unscientific waste disposal.
The project, which was launched on New Year Day, is part of ‘Azhak’, the hygiene protocol of the Corporation. The squad comprises three teams each consisting of a senior public health inspector, a public health inspector, and a sanitation worker.
“The enforcement squad conducted inspections in 1,095 establishments across the city over the past month and took action against 453 of them for unscientific waste disposal. Fines were imposed on 152 establishments or individuals,” said a Corporation health official. With the fine being around ₹5,000 for most offences, the Corporation has imposed a total fine of ₹90,500 so far, of which around ₹75,000 has already been remitted.
Besides ensuring general cleanliness in establishments, the Cheeta team ensures that the roadsides are clean and that waste management measures are being followed. Ensuring encroachment-free footpaths, clean water resources and proper drainages also come under the purview of the Cheeta squad.
