Coimbatore: A 45-year-old man who attempted suicide at Kavundampalayam police station premises on Saturday morning died without responding to treatment at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) around 11pm.
The deceased was identified as T Sekar, of Siva Nagar in Kavundampalayam. He was an autorickshaw driver. Police said he was battling for life with more than 70% burn injuries at the CMCH. Despite treatment, he died at the hospital. His body was handed over to his family after a postmortem on Sunday afternoon.
Sekar's son, Mani Bharath, 19, and his friend, N Janakiraman, 27, were arrested by Kavundampalayam police on Friday for illegal possession of 108g of marijuana for sale at Annai Indira Nagar in Kavundampalayam. The duo was lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison.
Meanwhile, Sekar's wife Jayapriya has alleged that police fostered a fake ganja case on their son. She added that Sekar had gone to the police station to request them to withdraw the case and release their son. Sekar's mother Shanthi also alleged that her son attempted self-immolation only after the inspector threatened to register a fake case against him as well.
Kavundampalayam police have registered a case and are investigating further.
