Kabul: The Taliban has discovered treasure worth billions of dollars, which the interim government is exploiting at an unprecedented scale. According to the reports, the Xi Jinping-led Chinese government is providing extensive support to the Taliban in this endeavor. In return, the Taliban administration is ensuring the security of Chinese engineers and workers. Additionally, this collaboration is helping the Taliban establish foreign connections and reshape global perceptions about Afghanistan.
It is a known fact that Afghanistan is a country that is rich in mineral resources. The country holds huge reserves of emeralds, rubies, marble, gold, and lithium. As per the United Nations assessments from 2010 and 2013 and the United States, the estimated value of the resources buried beneath Afghanistan’s mountains is around one trillion dollars. Afghanistan never exploited these reserves due to a long history of war and other disturbances. However, official data suggests that since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, over 200 mining contracts have been signed.
Humayun Afghan, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Mines in the Taliban’s interim government, stated, “We want Afghanistan to become self-sufficient, but there are obstacles.” He further added, “We have no experts, no infrastructure, and no knowledge.” He also mentioned that Taliban officials “will welcome anyone willing to invest, especially those with mining experience.”
It is important to note that there are many contracts involved in exploring precious minerals hidden beneath Afghanistan’s land. Experts are of the opinion that this is a process with a very low chance of success. Moreover, these mining projects could have severe environmental consequences for Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), there was a “rapid increase” in the production of coal, talc, and chromite in 2021 and 2022. Authorities are prioritizing resources that may lose value before others can be extracted, such as lithium, whose prices in global markets are still on the rise.
