The Tiruppur Corporation is keen on generating revenue by selling water treated at the two modern sewage treatment plants established as part of the underground drainage project.

Sewage water is being treated using Sequential Batch Reactor Technology that performs equalisation, biological treatment and secondary clarification in a single tank using a time-control device.

The pollution removal efficiency of SBR system is higher for nitrogen and phosphate. The BOD (biological oxygen demand) efficiency is found to be between 85 and 90%.

The treated sewage from the fully-automated plants is currently being let into the Noyyal river.

Industries spend substantial money for sourcing water from the New Tiruppur Area Development Corporation Limited (NTADCL).

The Corporation was prepared to sell the water to industries at an attractive rate of ₹7 per kilolitre, S. Ramamoorthy, Corporation Commissioner, said, adding: “We are even prepared to negotiate.” The treated water from these STPs will be ideal in particular for the dyeing industries, he said.

The industries will also be encouraged to explore the idea of establishing sumps closer to the STPs for sourcing the treated water on a regular basis using lorries. The advantage for the industries will be the perennial availability of the treated water, said Mr. Ramamoorthy.

Since there is not much agricultural activities at the city’s peripheries, the Corporation is keen on making a study of the extent of demand required by industrial units on a daily basis, sources added.
