The move to expand medical education in India is expected to boost the prospects of Karnataka, which has the third-largest medical education infrastructure in the country.
Karnataka govt is awaiting permission from the National Medical Commission for proposed medical colleges in Kanakapura and Ramanagara. This apart, the state govt has also planned to establish 11 medical colleges under the public-private partnership (PPP) model in 11 districts.
With the budget proposing to add an additional 10,000 medical seats across India by the next academic year, Karnataka is expected to get a major share as it is already awaiting the Centre's nod for two medical colleges with infrastructure in place."Already there are 70 medical colleges in Karnataka, including govt and private institutions, offering about 12,095 MBBS seats. Even if Karnataka manages to get 300 to 500 seats, this will be a big advantage for Karnataka's medical education sector," said a retired official from the medical education department.
The Centre also has goals to add 75,000 medical seats over the next five years. "Given the demand and students' increasing preference to study in Karnataka, the state govt can also think of increasing the intake of students at the existing medical colleges and submit a demand for additional seats along with new colleges," the official said.
