Varanasi: The historic occasion of the completion of 100 years of electrification of Indian Railways is being celebrated with pride at Banaras Locomotive Works. On this occasion, a special exhibition and various programmes are being organised at Surya Sarovar, BLW from Febr 3 to 5. This exhibition will showcase the development journey of railway electrification, historical achievements of Indian Railways, and future plans.
Calling it a golden chapter in the history of Indian Railways, BLW general manager Naresh Pal Singh said, "This journey of 100 years of railway electrification reflects the steps of
Indian Railways towards a self-reliant and environment-friendly future.
BLW is proud to be a part of this historic occasion."
Principal chief electrical engineer Sushil Kumar Srivastava, said that electrification has played a vital role in making Indian Railways modern, fast, and energy-sensitive. The exhibition will showcase the historical milestones of electrification, the evolution of locomotives, energy efficiency, and technological advancements of railway electrification through attractive models, digital displays, and documents.
He said that the use of electric traction technology in Indian railway traffic necessitated the rail electrification system. Electric traction uses electric power to run heavy transport vehicles such as trains and trams efficiently and in an environmentally friendly manner.
The first electric train in Indian Railways ran on Feb 3, 1925, on the Bombay Victoria Terminus (VT) and Kurla Harbour line.
