Coimbatore: The district mahila court on Thursday sentenced a 44-year-old man to five years of rigorous imprisonment for abetting his wife's suicide on November 24, 2016.
Anandakumar, 44, a welder, was residing at Ganapathipudur in Coimbatore city with his wife, Suji Lakshmi, 26, and their two children. Anandakumar was an alcoholic and often assaulted with his wife. He also failed to go to work regularly and pestered his wife to get money from her father to buy liquor.
On November 24, 2016, Anandakumar husband came home drunk and picked a fight with his wife. Unable to bear the mental agony, she died by suicide at their residence. Saravanampatti police registered a case against Anandakumar for abetting his wife's suicide and arrested him. District mahila court judge R Nandhini Devi pronounced the verdict on Thursday and awarded Anandakumar five years of rigorous imprisonment.
In another case verdict, the district mahila court awarded five years of rigorous imprisonment to a man for attempting to murder his wife.
Vikraman, 64, a scrap seller from Saradha Mill Road at Podanur in Coimbatore city, was addicted to alcohol. He often picked fights with his wife, Suseela, 60, and their two children. On October 25, 2022, he came home drunk, and his wife refused to open the main door for him.
In a fit of rage, Vikraman knocked on the door repeatedly. When Suseela opened the door, he stabbed her with a knife, causing severe injuries to her hand. She raised an alarm, and the neighbours rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, Vikraman managed to escape from the house.
Podanur police registered a case of attempted murder and arrested Vikraman. Judge Nandhini Devi awarded Vikraman five years of rigorous imprisonment to Vikraman. Special public prosecutor B Jisha appeared on behalf of the victims.
