Directed by Pankaj Parashar, ChaalBaaz was a slapstick comedy that saw Sridevi in two contrasting roles. She played twins – Anju, a girl trapped in a cruel environment, and Manju, a tomboyish character raised in a carefree atmosphere. The plot revolves around the two sisters who are separated at birth, with Anju facing torment from her malicious uncle while Manju grows up in a different world. While the duo Laxmikant–Pyarelal composed the film’s music, lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi.

Loosely inspired by the classic Sita Aur Geeta, the film was a commercial success, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of 1989, earning Rs 8 crore at the box office.
