Expert suggests regular maintenance of heritage structures a must

Published - January 30, 2025 06:21 pm IST - MYSURU

Prof. N.S. Rangaraju of the District Heritage and Conservation Committee and convenor of INTACH Mysuru said that regular maintenance and periodic restoration of heritage structures extend their life span, and prolonged negligence leads to their structural deterioration.

He said many heritage buildings in Mysuru have neither maintenance nor restoration.

However, there are examples of how timely intervention has helped conserve such structures, he said, citing the examples of Dr. Radhakrishnan’s Bungalow, CADA building, Government House, Oriental Research Institute, etc.

“Even the Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion was in bad shape, and a portion of the roof had caved in due to heavy rains. But the restoration work is being taken up scientifically,” Prof. Rangaraju.

He said some of the buildings that require immediate attention include Vasanth Mahal, Lalitha Mahal, CFTRI, Maharaja’s College hostel, and Yuvaraja’s College.

Timely conservation measures and adhering to scientific norms are a must, he added.
