New York and New Jersey’s Port Authority Airports Achieve Record-Breaking 2024, Handling 145.9 Million Passengers
New York and New Jersey’s major airports set an all-time high in 2024, welcoming 145.9 million passengers—surpassing the previous peak of 143.8 million recorded in 2023. This surge was largely fueled by an unprecedented boom in international travel, which saw 52.3 million passengers, outpacing even pre-pandemic 2019 figures.
The milestone coincides with a massive $30 billion airport transformation initiative, delivering cutting-edge terminals at JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty. These modernized facilities have earned prestigious accolades from Skytrax, UNESCO, and Forbes Travel Guide, reinforcing the region’s status as a premier global travel hub.
December 2024 also shattered records, registering 12.5 million travelers—a 5% year-over-year increase. The holiday season saw an even bigger jump, with 5.5 million travelers, marking a 7% rise from the previous year.
Port Authority officials celebrated the achievement as a testament to the airports’ full post-pandemic resurgence and the ongoing success of large-scale modernization efforts aimed at elevating passenger experience and positioning the region as a global aviation leader.
