Lucknow: King George's Medical University (KGMU) will soon offer advanced treatment options for conditions such as vitiligo (leukoderma) and psoriasis with the installation of an NB-UVB UVA chamber machine. A budget of Rs 15 lakh has already been allocated for its purchase.
NB-UVB technology involves exposing affected parts of the body to narrow-band ultraviolet B light, which has proven effective in treating vitiligo, psoriasis, and severe itching (pruritus).
"The method is safe, painless, and incurs no additional treatment costs. Studies indicate that it is suitable for use in children and pregnant women as well," said Prof Swastika Suvirya, head of the dermatology department.
She added that the university is also preparing to introduce postgraduate (PG) courses in its dermatology department. An application for approval has been submitted to the National Medical Commission (NMC), and an inspection is expected soon.
"We already have the necessary infrastructure for starting PG courses. Some additional machines and equipment are being procured, and we have applied for course recognition. We are hopeful that the courses will begin in the next academic session after the inspection," she said.
