Mohali: Five primary schools in the district will be transformed into "Schools of Happiness", with each school receiving infrastructure improvements at an average cost of Rs 40 lakh. A large-scale School Management Committee (SMC) meeting is scheduled for Feb 11.
The announcement was made by sub-divisional magistrate Damandeep Kaur during a meeting of the District Education Development Committee on Wednesday at the District Administrative Complex in Mohali. The schools selected for the makeover include Bhagwas, Bar Majra, Parol, Jhajheri, and Manak Majra. These ‘Schools of Happiness' will focus on improving infrastructure, facilities, human resources, foundational learning achievements, and promoting holistic development of children.
During the meeting, various activities under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan and the Mid-Day Meal Scheme were scrutinised. District education officer (elementary) Prem Mittal apprised the SDM about the grants received for civil works to upgrade school infrastructure.
Of Rs 5.56 crore grant received for 67 projects during the 2023-24 financial year, Rs 4.46 crore was utilised, with the remaining Rs 89.06 lakh to be expended by Feb 28, 2025, to complete the construction work. Similarly, for the 2024-25 financial year, a grant of Rs 6.45 crore was received for construction activities, including additional rooms, art and craft rooms, library rooms, toilets for girls and boys, major repairs, and science labs. Of this, Rs 6.22 crore was utilised, with the remaining Rs 23.58 lakh to be expended by Feb 28, 2025.
It was further mentioned that a mega SMC meeting will be conducted on Feb 11 at all govt schools (primary, middle, high, and senior secondary) in Punjab, focusing on "school cleanliness education enhancement".
Regarding the Mid-Day Meal in district schools, it was conveyed that foodgrains for the first, second, and third quarters were distributed to 88,532 students from UKG, grades one to five, and grades six to eight in govt and aided schools by the FCI department. The inspection of foodgrains for the fourth quarter by FCI is still pending, with distribution set to follow afterward.
Additionally, govt school children receive a fruit (one banana each) along with their meal every Saturday. Special needs children enrolled in govt and govt-aided schools, covered under home-based education, are also provided with Mid-Day Meals under the PM Poshan scheme.
