Nine pharmaceutical, biotechnology cos shows interest to invest Rs 4,349 crore in Odisha: Mukesh Mahaling

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is going to witness a significant boost in its healthcare, pharma and biotechnology sectors, as nine leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies have shown their interest to invest Rs 4,349 crore in the state. This was announced by Mukesh Mahaling, State Health and Family Welfare Minister while addressing a high-level sectoral session on "Universal Health and Wellness in Odisha" on the concluding day of the Utkarsh Odisha - Make in Odisha Conclave 2025.

Mahaling said Odisha is emerging as a hub for innovation and investment in the health sector.

He invited private players to collaborate with the Odisha government to realize the vision of Utkarsh Odisha – 2036 and, more importantly, to transform the lives of millions.

The minister stated that the state government has introduced the Odisha Biotechnology Policy 2024 to prioritize both basic and applied research, as well as technological innovation, by fostering collaboration between industry, academia, and society.
Describing Odisha as a rising hub of innovation and investment, he emphasized the state's focus on expanding super-specialty hospitals, multi-disciplinary healthcare facilities, and the indigenous production of affordable medicines, vaccines, and medical devices.
During a panel discussion on "Skilling in the Health Sector for Utkarsh Odisha – 2036," experts discussed strategies to position Odisha as a leading state in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology.
Mahaling highlighted Odisha’s significant strides in medical education, with 12 functional medical colleges and two more in the pipeline. Additionally, he noted that eight nursing colleges are currently operational, with seven more under development.
The minister also claimed that Odisha is among the few states offering dialysis services at sub-divisional hospitals and populous community health centers (CHCs).
Furthermore, he announced that the state plans to recruit 5,000 doctors and 1,200 nurses to strengthen the healthcare workforce.

Ltd., Vikash Residential Institutions Pvt. Ltd., Emsurg Group of Companies, Onlyhealth Pvt. Ltd, .J-VPD Diagnostics Pvt. Ltd and SUM Odisha
According to UNI, Mahaling stated that these investments will accelerate Odisha’s progress in modern healthcare, pharmaceutical, and biotech manufacturing, aligning with the vision of Vikashit Odisha 2036.
With a strong policy framework, infrastructure expansion, and a favorable investment climate, Odisha is well on its way to becoming a national leader in healthcare and biotechnology, the minister asserted.
