Ludhiana: Two PhD students from Punjab Agricultural University recently took part in an annual bird census at Harike wetland and wildlife sanctuary. The initiative is part of the Asian Waterbird Census (AWC).
Tishali Mehta and Sukhdeep Kaur are doctoral students of the department of ornithology.
Organised by the Punjab department of wildlife and forest preservation, AWC aims to monitor the population and diversity of waterbirds, providing critical insights into the health of wetland ecosystems. The census is part of the global International Waterbird Census, which plays a key role in guiding conservation efforts worldwide.
"They also recorded migratory birds that arrive during winter," said HOD Tejdeep Kaur Kler, under whose guidance the students were sent.
The Harike wetland, located at the confluence of the Beas and Sutlej, is home to a rich diversity of bird species. Each year, the census attracts ornithologists, students, and conservationists.
