Patna: Armed miscreants gunned down a 46-year-old man over a love marriage dispute while he was asleep at Madhopur village under Mohanpur police station area of Samastipur district on Sunday night. The deceased was identified as Amresh Rai, son of Awadh Kishore Rai, resident of the same village.
On being informed about the incident, the police reached the spot and started an investigation into the matter. "Ten assailants arrived on three motorbikes late on Sunday night and fatally shot Amresh in the chest from close range when he was sleeping at the entrance of the house. The incident stems from tensions between two families following a love marriage between the victim's son and a girl of the same village, a year ago. The girl's family had earlier issued threats of dire consequences," said a police officer.
Samastipur superintendent of police (SP) Ashok Mishra, "A police team, led by the DSP of Patori, has been dispatched to investigate the case," he said and assured that the suspects would be apprehended soon.
The police official said the victim's son Nitish Kumar eloped with Mausami Priya from the same village, marrying her on April 18, 2024. "Her father, Arun Rai, filed a kidnapping case at Mohanpur police station on April 22. After being away for several months, Mausami appeared in a court in September to record her statement under section 164. She declared the kidnapping allegations false, confirming it was a consensual love marriage. Since then, she resided at her in-laws' house with Nitish," the officer said.
According to the victim's father Awadh, his son was sleeping at the house entrance when 10 assailants on three motorcycles attacked. They shot his son in the chest from close range, killing him on the spot. The family awoke to the gunshot sound, but the attackers had fled by then. The police sent the body to the district hospital for post-mortem and started the probe.
