The residents of eight villages: Adiyanoothu, Thottanuthu, Chettinayakanpatti, Seelapadi, Pallapatti, Balakrishnapuram, Mullipadi and Kurumbapatti in Dindigul district on Monday submitted a petition to Dindigul Collector M.N. Poongodi, opposing the move to merge the villages with Dindigul Corporation.

The villagers staged a demonstration on the Collectorate premises pressing for their demand. The residents said that a resolution was passed at the gram sabha meetings held on January 26 (Republic Day) opposing the merger of with Dindigul Corporation.

The residents said that the livelihood of the villagers would be affected if the villages were merged with the Corporation and they would be deprived of the benefits under various government schemes. The merger with the Corporation means that they had to pay higher taxes, they said.

Earlier, this month, the residents of Nallampatti, Yagappanpatti, Vedapatti, Vazhakapatti and Anthoniyar Nagar had also protested opposing the move to merge the villages with Dindigul Corporation. When basic amenities had not been provided to the residents, the authorities concerned should first take necessary steps to ensure that it was provided to the people, they had said.
