Scooter hits divider, delivery girl dies
Kolkata: A 30-year-old delivery agent for an online pharmacy, Suchitra Debnath, died early on Monday morning when her electric scooter collided with a road divider near Eco Park in New Town.
Debnath, a resident of Patuli, was pronounced dead at a local hospital after suffering severe head injuries in the crash, which occurred around 4 am on the service road near Eco Park Gate 2, police said. Debnath wore a helmet, but it came off under the impact of the accident.
According to investigating officers, Debnath was en route to deliver medicines to a customer in New Town after picking up the package from a pharmacy near Derozio College on Rajarhat Main Road when the accident took place.
"Initial investigation suggests the victim lost control of her e-scooter before crashing into the divider. CCTV footage showed she was riding along the service road when she stopped, took a U-turn, and tried to enter the main flank when she lost control and hit the road divider and was flung off the two-wheeler before she came under the wheels of another vehicle," said the officer.
Debnath was working as a delivery agent for the past two years to support her family. Family members revealed that she was the sole breadwinner for her elderly parents.
Police have registered a case and are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to determine the exact cause of the accident. The online pharmacy company has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.
The incident is the fourth fatal accident in and around New Town in the last week. Early on Friday, a young Sector V employee, McNally Das (28), was killed and two of her friends were severely injured after the bike they were riding in New Town rammed into a roadside divider.
Earlier that same day, Lakshminarayan Patra (45), a delivery agent from Kashipur, Kolkata, was fatally struck by a motorcycle while crossing the road in Gauranganagar near New Town. Last Wednesday, another pedestrian, Partha De, lost his life after being struck by a reckless lorry at Newtown Akankha crossing.
