Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath on Monday released a circular outlining the process for renewing trade licences for the financial year 2025-26 within the BBMP jurisdiction. In order to maintain transparency, renewal will be carried out online.
The BBMP has stated that trade licences will not be granted for shops established after 2015 on roads less than 40 feet wide in residential zones, while establishments on roads wider than 40 feet will have their licences renewed only for permitted activities.
According to guidelines, licences will not be renewed for businesses operating in unauthorised structures or areas like rooftops and parking zones. Businesses establishments generating over 100 kg of waste daily must show proof of waste processing or disposal agreements with empanelled vendors.
Hotels and food businesses must comply with plastic bans and display appropriate signage for renewal. All establishments must use separate bins for wet (green) and dry (blue) waste and manage disposal scientifically.
Businesses establishments can renew licences for durations ranging from one to five financial years (April to March), renewal fees must be paid only for the desired financial year, and payments can be made online or through bank challans at Canara Bank.
As per the deadline, renewal fees can be paid without penalty between February 1 and 28, and 25% penalty will be levied for renewal between March 1 and 31. From April 1, 2025, a 100% penalty will be applicable for delayed payments.
Sneha Nandihal, co-founder, I Change Indiranagar, told The Hindu that the rule pertaining to 40 feet is not new but the BBMP has failed to act against such establishments mushroomed in residential areas. The shop owners will not approach for renewal as they do not possess one. Unless the BBMP acts, such establishments will continue to operate flouting the rules.
