This year, to celebrate 75 years since the formation of the Republic of India, President Droupadi Murmu introduced a special touch to the customary 'at home' reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Instead of the usual white card embossed with the Lion Capital of Ashoka, invitations were sent in a specially curated box, highlighting India's rich cultural heritage. Let's know what was inside this invitation box.

Showcasing southern craftsmanship

The curated box was a unique concept by President Murmu herself, designed with the help of the National Institute of Design (NID). It features craftwork from the five southern states of India: Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.

The bamboo container, adorned with Kalamkari motifs and a painting of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, contains items representing local expertise and sustainable craftsmanship. The box includes:

FPJ Shorts

Pochampally Ikat Fabric (Telangana): A removable fabric base that can be reused as a roll-up pencil pouch.

Etikoppaka Toys (Andhra Pradesh): Two hand-turned wooden lacquer toys.

Ganjifa Art (Karnataka): A Mysore Ganjifa art fridge magnet.

Screw-Pine Weaving (Kerala): A beautifully crafted leaf bookmark.

Kancheepuram Silk (Tamil Nadu): A handcrafted silk pouch.

Promoting local expertise and sustainability

The initiative aimed to spotlight local expertise through products featured in the ODOP (One District One Product) and GI (Geographical Indication) schemes. “We hope this invitation will serve as a meaningful keepsake, to remind you of your participation in this memorable event," stated the Rashtrapati Bhavan website. Each item in the box was made using sustainable and recyclable materials, reflecting a commitment to eco-consciousness.

Seating arrangements for the reception

President Droupadi Murmu and the President of Indonesia, the chief guest for this year’s Republic Day celebrations was seated on golden-coloured chairs. On one side of the president will be Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and on the other side was Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The President’s family was also seated in the circle, alongside members of the Council of Ministers and other special guests. Among the invitees were prominent figures such as Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, and Delhi Chief Minister Atishi.

The curated invitation box was not only a symbol of India's diverse cultural heritage but also a meaningful keepsake for attendees. From Pochampally Ikat to Kancheepuram silk, every detail of the invitation highlights the nation's rich traditions, creativity, and sustainable practices.
