Importance of coastal line

While there is no sign of the proposed railway line between Thoothukudi and Madurai being taken up now, the east coast link between Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi, and between Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari via Tiruchendur have also been put in the back burner. The coastal line will link religious centres such as Thirupullani, Valinokkam, Ervadi, Tiruchendur, besides Koodankulam (nuclear plant) and Kulasekarapattinam (ISRO’s rocket launching site). This line will also serve as a strategically important railway line, in view of Chinese interests in Sri Lanka.

Noise pollution

Though efforts are made by the authorities to reduce noise pollution, mini bus crew in Kanniyakumari district are very adamant in playing loud and unpleasant songs, making passengers uncomfortable. As civilisation advances, correspondingly the noise pollution also increases in our society. I implore the authorities concerned to see that the minibuses do not add to the noise pollution.

Reconstruct wall

The boundary wall of Kanniyakumari - Nagercoil highway collapsed at Achenkulam. The other side of the collapsed wall is so deep. Speeding vehicles may fall into it. The highway authorities must reconstruct the wall.

No action taken

Despite repeated representations, the authorities turn a blind eye to the stray dog menace in Palayamkottai. Road accidents caused by these dogs have become frequent. The worst affected are two-wheeler riders and children going to school by walk. Though there was talk of castrating the stray dogs to curtail breeding, nothing has materialised. The corporation must plunge into action and put an end to this menace.

Lay proper road

After the floods of 2023, the Thoothukudi - Tiruchendur State Highway has not been repaired but for patchwork here and there. Water stagnates on the stretch from Muthiapuram bus stop up to Harbour construction road junction even after a drizzle due to improper design. Hence the road has to be dug up and relaid with proper gradient to avoid water stagnation.

Relocate dump

This is with reference to the article, ‘Relocate dumping yard on Beach Road. Accumulation of unprocessed wastes and emission of foul smell at Valampurivilai dumping yard on Beach Road Junction in Nagercoil is a health hazard. Fire in the garbage mounds will lead destruction of, properties and lives. The Corporation should relocate the dump to the outskirts with additional waste processing machines.
