The city of Pune has seen a surge in cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), with 74 reported patients over the past three weeks. Among them, 14 patients are currently on ventilator support. In response, Union Minister and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol, after discussions with Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale, has announced three significant decisions to address the crisis and safeguard public health.

Key Decisions Announced by Murlidhar Mohol

  1. Free Treatment at Kamla Nehru Hospital:
Patients receiving care for GBS at Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Kamla Nehru Hospital will be provided with free treatment.
  2. Financial Aid for Private Hospital Patients:
Under the Urban Poor Scheme, GBS patients undergoing treatment in private hospitals will receive financial assistance of up to ₹2 lakh from the PMC.
  3. Free Immunoglobulin Injection Supply:
The PMC will provide Immunoglobulin injections free of cost for GBS patients being treated at Kamla Nehru Hospital and private hospitals.

Strict Monitoring of Hospital Bills

Municipal health officers have been tasked with monitoring medical bills at hospitals treating GBS patients, including Navale Hospital, Poona Hospital, Bharati Hospital, and Deenanath Hospital. If hospitals are found to be overcharging patients, strict action will be taken against them.

Affected Areas and PMC Initiatives

Most cases have been reported in areas such as Nandedgaon and Kirkatwadi on Sinhagad Road. To curb the spread, the PMC has ramped up its efforts, including increased monitoring and public health initiatives.
