A 25-year-old woman, nine months pregnant, tragically sustained severe brain injuries in a scooter accident at Parner on January 20. Despite the heartbreaking circumstances, her family’s courage and compassion have given others a second chance at life through organ donation.
Following the accident, the woman was initially treated at a local hospital for traumatic brain injuries. During her treatment, doctors performed an emergency cesarean section to deliver her baby boy. The patient was later transferred to DPU Super Specialty Hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, via an advanced life support ambulance.
At the hospital, despite all efforts, the woman was declared brain dead. Her grieving husband and father made the selfless decision to donate her organs. Aarti Gokhale, Central Coordinator of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), revealed that the accident occurred while the woman was riding pillion on a scooter with her husband.
DPU Super Specialty Hospital successfully performed transplants of a kidney, liver, and corneas, saving multiple lives. According to Dr. Bhagyashree Patil, Pro-Chancellor of Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pimpri, “Despite their immense grief, the family displayed extraordinary courage and compassion, turning a tragedy into a source of hope for others.”
Dr. Vrishali Patil, Program Director and HOD of Multi-Organ Transplant at DPU Super Specialty Hospital, lauded the family’s decision: “This complex, life-saving procedure highlights our team’s capabilities and advanced medical facilities. The family’s decision exemplifies incredible humanity and generosity during an unimaginable tragedy.”
This heart-wrenching story underscores the profound impact of organ donation, transforming grief into hope and life for those in need.
