Pune: Police have appealed to company representatives in the Khed MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) area to report any troublemakers. This follows a recent shooting in the Chakan MIDC where the general manager of a private firm was injured when two individuals fired bullets at him.
Prabhakar More, police inspector of Khed police station, said, "In light of the shooting incident, we organised a meeting with industrial representatives to discuss their concerns. We urged them to file complaints against troublemakers so that we can take appropriate action. We have also recommended that they install CCTV cameras and enhance security measures at their facilities."
Additionally, More said, they would increase daytime and nighttime patrols.
However, private companies said the police presence was negligible in industrial pockets.
"There is a competition among scrap dealers and private players for bagging contracts. This race often converts into crimes. Mostly locals are involved in this ‘mad race'. At industry level it is difficult to deal with because we do not want to disturb equations with them. Therefore, the police interference plays a major role to ensure a conducive atmosphere," an employee said.
Another staffer said there are also incidents of robbery. "This has become a major concern for our employees, especially contractual workers. Often they do not complain due to fear."
However, More claimed that the Pune rural police always registered complaints.
Dilip Batwal, secretary of the Federation of Chakan Industry, said, "Industrial crime has become a major concern in Chakan and surrounding industrial pockets. Unless we create a conducive ecosystem we will not be able to get new industries in the region."
