Dibrugarh: Police in Jorhat and Lakhimpur districts carried out drug disposal operations on Saturday, incinerating large consignments of seized narcotics valued at several crores.
In Jorhat, police officers destroyed a total of 1.27kg of heroin, 65kg of cannabis and 568 yaba tablets. Yaba, which translates to ‘crazy medicine' in Thai, is a potent combination of methamphetamine and caffeine that has gained notoriety for its rampant abuse among youths.
The destruction of the narcotics was conducted in compliance with Section 52-A of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, which mandates the proper disposal of seized drugs. The operation was carried out in the presence of the District Drug Disposal Committee, which oversaw the proceedings to ensure transparency and compliance with legal requirements.
"The drugs that were destroyed were seized during various anti-narcotic operations carried out throughout the district. By systematically destroying these seized substances, we are not just removing them from circulation but also sending a strong message to illegal drug traffickers," Jorhat SP Shwetank Mishra said.
In a parallel operation, Lakhimpur district police conducted a similar drug disposal programme under the supervision of SP Mihirjit Gayan. The Lakhimpur operation involved burning 309 grams of heroin and 697kg of cannabis. Prior to the disposal, the police ensured that necessary samples of the seized drugs were preserved for future legal proceedings.
"Today's incineration signifies our relentless fight against drug networks. These drugs were seized from various anti-narcotics operations. This effort is not just about eliminating drugs but also about sending a clear message that
drug trafficking will not be tolerated," Gayan said.
