Ghaziabad: A 30-year-old project manager with cab hailing company Blu Smart was found dead in a canal in Nahal village on Wednesday, a week after he was reported missing from his Gurgaon house.
Police initiated a murder case on Thursday night after the autopsy report revealed strangulation and ante-mortem injuries.
Siddharth Gautam, the assistant commissioner of police in Masuri, said a passerby called on the emergency number 112 to inform them about a body floating in the canal near Neela Bridge in Masuri. A team of cops reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it for an autopsy.
A photo ID identified the man as Prince Rana, who worked for Blu Smart in its Gurgaon office. Ghaziabad cops checked with their counterparts in the Haryana city, who confirmed that a missing person's complaint had been lodged by Rana's wife on Jan 15.
"The autopsy has revealed strangulation as cause of death. The body has other injury marks as well. We will send this report to Gurgaon police now," Gautam said.
Preliminary investigation revealed Rana had left home on Jan 15 morning, telling his wife he was heading to work. She later discovered his mobile phone on their bed in airplane mode, suggesting that he did not want anyone to reach out to him.
After learning from his colleagues that he hadn't reached office, Rana's wife contacted other family members, who were unable to locate him either. Rana, she found, had even left his car in the parking lot.
Rana's wife also told police she found searches for ‘suicide points near me' in his phone's browsing history. The family filed a formal missing person's complaint on Jan 16.
As part of their investigation, a team of cops was sent to various NCR cities — including Ghaziabad — looking for Rana.
"Soon after we came to know about his identity, we informed cops in Gurgaon. Family members came here and identified the body as well," the ACP said.
Gautam said while Gurgaon police was conducting the primary investigation into the case, cops in Ghaziabad were providing them "full cooperation".
Despite repeated attempts, Blu Smart officials could not be reached for a comment.
