    Where to Watch:

The intriguing film that follows the life of a Mexican lawyer tasked with an unconventional job to help a cartel boss retire and begin a new life is now available to stream on Netflix and Mubi.

Although Emilia Perez has received praise for shedding light on an inspiring story and winning several awards, it has also faced criticism. Some questioned why a movie set in Mexico was directed by a French filmmaker and did not feature a single Mexican actor in the lead roles. As the controversy grew, Adriana Paz, who plays Emilia’s lover, Epifania, in the film, defended the project during an interview with IndieWire.

She said, “I’ve heard people saying it’s offensive to Mexico. I really want to know why, because I didn’t feel that way. And I have questioned some people that I trust, not just as artists but as people, and they don’t feel that way, so I am trying to understand. The first time that I saw it, I told Jacques, ‘You’re a genius.’ I was crying, I felt moved, and I was, like, ‘I am so grateful that I’m part of this project’."

“I really appreciate Emilia, because it’s a spectacle and its songs and dancing, but it’s not like any other musical. It’s not perfect dancing and a perfect sound. The music is dirty, full of pain, erratic, like the sensation of living in Mexico," Adriana Paz shared.

Ahead of the Oscars, Emilia Perez won top honours at the Golden Globes, including the best original song and Zoe Saldana won an award in supporting female actor category.
