The 17 cities in Madhya Pradesh where the government may implement a complete prohibition of alcohol are yet to be officially announced.
However, based on Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s statement and speculation surrounding the upcoming cabinet meeting, the ban is likely to be implemented in Ujjain, Orchha, Salkanpur, Chitrakoot, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, Maihar, Amarkantak, the Pashupatinath temple area of Mandsaur, and potentially eight other religious cities.

These cities are renowned for their religious significance. While Ujjain and Omkareshwar are revered Jyotirlinga sites, Maihar is a prominent Shaktipeeth. Orchha houses the Raja Ram Mandir, where Lord Ram is worshipped as a king. Maheshwar holds a prominent place among the country’s religious sites. Amarkantak is the origin point of the Narmada river.
The Madhya Pradesh government is convening for a ‘destination cabinet meeting’ in Maheshwar, Khargone, to commemorate the 300th birth anniversary of Devi Ahilya Bai. This meeting holds historical significance as it is the first cabinet meeting in Maheshwar since 2003.
During this meeting, the government is anticipated to make a final decision on the prohibition of alcohol in the 17 religious cities. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had previously indicated this decision during an event in Narsinghpur district. The cabinet will also deliberate on the new excise policy, which includes measures to compensate for potential revenue loss due to the alcohol ban and new regulations for liquor shop auctions.
The government also plans to introduce various schemes to honour Devi Ahilyabai’s legacy and contributions to Indian history on her 300th birth anniversary.
