Agartala: Police have launched a search for 21 women accused of assaulting a woman and forcibly shaving her head in public at Lalsinghmura of Bishalgarh in Sepahijala district on Thursday. The incident occurred after the victim allegedly eloped with her brother-in-law.
Authorities said all the accused, including the victim's elder sister and several local Self-Help Group (SHG) members, have evaded arrest. The victim was subsequently escorted to Agartala airport on Friday for her journey to Bengaluru to join her paramour.
Reports said the victim, who married 14 years ago in the same village, has two children — a 12-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter. She had been living separately for two years with her elder sister. She recently developed a relationship with her brother-in-law and both relocated to Bengaluru, abandoning their families.
The victim said, "I was promised to go back to a happy conjugal life in Bengaluru, after filing a formal divorce. But the situation reversed as soon as I reached home. Neighbours and family members have been pressuring me to scrap the relationship."
The situation escalated when she arranged her return to Bengaluru and planned to take her daughter. Recounting her experience, she said, "The SHG members came to my house and demanded loan money of Rs 30,000 and I promised them to pay the amount within three months but they didn't accept. They pulled me out, assaulted me badly, and shaved my head in front of my children. No one is there to save me."
Sheuli Das, OC of Bishalgarh women police station, said, "We got a call from an unknown number that an injured lady was kept confined in a room in Lalsinghmura around 3 pm. We rushed immediately and rescued her. After treatment, her statement was recorded and we launched a search against the accused persons."
