Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, who is largely in news for his controversial statements, is now in trouble as he is been sentenced to three months of Jail. The case was filed against the director by a company called ‘Shree’ in 2018. It is regarding the cheque bounce case that has been going on for the past seven years.
According to Telangana Today report, after hearing the case for seven years, the Mumbai court issued a non-bailable warrant in Ram Gopal Varma’s name. The filmmaker was found guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, which ‘penalises cheque dishonour due to insufficient funds or exceeding the account’s arranged amount’. He has also been directed to pay compensation of Rs 3.72 lakh to the complainant within three months or suffer simple imprisonment for three more months.
A case of cheque bounce was initiated by a company named Shree through Maheshchandra Mishra in 2018. In June 2002, the director was granted bail after providing a personal bond and a Rs 5000 security deposit.
While sentencing him on Tuesday, magistrate YP Pujari mentioned, “No question of set-off under Section 428 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 as the accused has not spent any period in custody during the trial.” The judgements with observations of the court is yet to be finalised.
Ram Gopal Varma last directed the 2024 film Vyuham which revolves arounds the untimely death of former Chief Minster of Andhra Pardesh YS Rajasekhara Reddy. He was last seen in a cameo appearance in Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD. Moreover, the director recently announced that he will helm a ‘Scary film’ next titled Syndicate.
