Shillong celebrates Netaji’s birth anniversary
Shillong: The 128th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was celebrated on Thursday with floral tributes at the statue of the ‘prince among patriots' on the State Central Library premises and other localities in the city, reports Manosh Das.
In his endeavour to form the first Congress govt of undivided Assam in 1938, Netaji had met the then British governor of Assam in Shillong and put forth the claim to form govt. Understanding that the governor was not inclined, he threatened that if he was not allowed to form a govt here then Congress govts all over India would resign.
Finally the governor agreed to swear-in a Congress govt under the premiership of Gopinath Bordoloi on Nov 18, 1938.
In 1938, Netaji had addressed seven public meetings in Shillong, including in the heritage Khasi National Durbar Hall and the Opera Hall at the Thana Road. Earlier in 1927, Bose had stayed in Shillong to recuperate from illness.
