Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu inaugurated the State-level inter-school swimming competitions at Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu’s swimming pool on Seevalaperi Road in Palayamkottai on Wednesday.

In the presence of Collector K.P. Karthikeyan, the Speaker honoured the winners with the medals and the certificates. The gold medal winners will represent Tamil Nadu in the national-level meet to be held later.

Mr. Appavu said Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, during his recent visit to the district, released ₹10 lakh for renovating the swimming pool and allied facilities for organising the State-level swimming competition. Top two swimmers of district-level meet are competing in the State-level meet to be held till January 25.

While 1,407 girls are competing on Wednesday and Thursday (January 22 and 23) in 47 categories, the events for 2,063 boys will be held on Friday and Saturday (January 24 and 25)

Swimmers from Tirunelveli district have so far won 48 gold, 36 silver and 18 bronze medals in the national-level meets.

“Work on the sports complex near Radhapuram, which was sanctioned by the Chief Minister, will start shortly,” Mr. Appavu said.

Mayor G. Ramakrishnan, Deputy Mayor K.R. Raju, District Panchayat Chairman V.S.R. Jegadish and Chief Educational Officer M. Sivakumar were present.
