MANGALURU: Dr Shaweez Faizi, Fertility Specialist at Nova IVF Fertility, said that approximately 3-5% of women visiting the clinic may experience low Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) levels, which may significantly impact their chances of conceiving naturally.
She was speaking at the fertility conference aimed at raising awareness about infertility in Mangaluru and the medical advancements in the field of fertility treatments, organised by Nova IVF Fertility Mangaluru, recently.
She said that the awareness of AMH testing in Mangalore remains low, with only about two out of every 100 women opting for this test to understand their fertility levels. Low AMH levels can indicate a reduced ovarian reserve, which can affect a woman’s ability to conceive, she said.
AMH is a fertility hormone for women that determines, to some extent, the quantity of eggs present. This indicates that the ovaries have fewer eggs available. As women age, their AMH hormone levels also decline, especially post 35 years.
Low AMH can be caused by various factors, including genetic problems, endometriosis, autoimmune disorders, chronic pelvic infections, and previous medical treatments such as ovarian cyst removal. While low ovarian reserve can make conception more difficult, pregnancy can be possible, and women must consult a fertility specialist on time.
Along with the AMH test, even a transvaginal ultrasound is done to determine the quantity of eggs. Infertility can be caused by issues in both men and women, with male factors like low sperm count or poor quality playing a significant role in many cases.
Addressing the growing concern of male infertility in the region, Dr Faizi added, "In addition to women’s reproductive health, there is a growing concern surrounding male fertility, particularly the decline in sperm counts and sperm quality, which can be prevalent in men aged 30-40.
We have observed 40-50% of men facing male infertility issues. Adopting a healthy lifestyle with good sleep and diet is crucial for sperm health. Men must come in for a basic semen evaluation. We would recommend men to avoid self-medicating on tablets to boost their sperm count."
Eminent fertility specialists, including Dr Aviva Pinto Rodrigues and Dr Sulbha Arora, discussed advancements in Fertility Preservation and Recurrent IVF Failure. The conference saw the participation of fertility experts and gynaecologists across Mangalore and adjoining regions like Sullia, Kundapura, Udupi, and Puttur.
Dr Pratap Kumar, Senior Consultant, Reproductive Medicine at KMC Manipal and Dr Bharathi Rajashekhar, President of Karnataka State Obstetric and Gynecology Association, were the chief guests.
