A food street aimed at encouraging safe and healthy food practices will come up at Kasturba Nagar in Panampilly Nagar here as part of the Centre’s ‘Modernisation of 100 Food Streets’ initiative.

Work is under way to set up the food street by March on land owned by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA). The project is a collaboration between the GCDA, Kochi Corporation, National Health Mission, and the State Food Safety department. The nationwide initiative aims to showcase quality food served in a healthy environment.

The food street at Kasturba Nagar will feature around 20 outlets, with seating arrangements, lighting, toilet facilities, and solid waste management systems in place, according to an official communication. Besides, parking and entertainment spaces will be provided.

“The food outlets will serve traditional food delicacies as part of the efforts to attract both domestic and foreign tourists to the spot. Residents will have an opportunity to experience diverse range of culinary delights,” the communication said.

As part of the city beautification project, the GCDA will complete the walkway, entertainment centre, and food street facility at Kasturba Nagar. The authorities said that the project was expected to be completed by the end of February. The food outlets will be required to adhere to food safety norms, and the branding of the food streets will follow FSSAI guidelines.
