3 workers killed in soil collapse in W Burdwan
Salanpur: Three labourers died and another was injured after piled-up soil collapsed on them during PHE drinking water pipeline installation work at Dalmia, under Salanpur gram panchayat in West Burdwan district on Tuesday.
The three deceased were identified as Rezak Sk (22) and Rohit Uddin Sk (18) of Jharkhand, and Nipesh Paswan (20) of Chinakuri village at Kulti in West Burdwan. The injured worker was admitted to hospital; his condition was stable at the time of going to press.
Salanpur gram panchayat pradhan Tirtha Bauri said the four labourers were working on the site at the time of the incident. As the four labourers got buried under soil, villagers and a police team came to the spot. They were rushed to Asansol district hospital, where three of them were declared dead.
Locals started an agitation, alleging that the deaths occurred due to illegal mining. They also demanded compensation for the family of the deceased.
West Burdwan DM Ponnambalam S said, "Three workers died, and one was injured during PHE pipeline installation work. This is a regrettable incident. The executive engineer of PHE has been sent to the site. The West Burdwan district administration and PHE department stand with the families of the deceased."
