Aizawl: Mizoram disaster management and rehabilitation department is set to start recovery and reconstruction works for disasters caused by Cyclone Remal (May 27-28) and last year's hailstorm, thunderstorm, and gusty winds. These efforts will be funded by the state disaster response fund (SDRF), according to DMR officials on Tuesday.
Officials said Rs 297.92 lakh has been allocated under SDRF for the first phase, with works soon to begin at 35 locations.
An additional Rs 634.15 lakh has been submitted for the second phase, targeting 125 locations, while a proposal for the third phase, covering 46 locations with an estimated expenditure of Rs 249.40 lakh, has also been prepared. This marks the first time recovery and reconstruction works are being undertaken for disasters in the state.
Proposals for recovery and reconstruction were received from district disaster management authorities, the officials said.
Ongoing works under the ‘state shelf of project' are being carried out at 78 locations using Rs 522 lakh from the state disaster mitigation fund (SDMF) 2023-2024. The ‘district shelf of project' is also underway at 68 locations with Rs 348 lakh from SDMF 2023-24.
For the 2024-25 fiscal, works under the state shelf project and district shelf project amounting to Rs 271.19 lakh and Rs 178.80 lakh respectively have been selected.
A state emergency operation centre is to be constructed in Aizawl at a cost of Rs 18.50 crore, and plans are also in place to construct a public safety and disaster relief communication system at a cost of Rs 19.75 crore, officials added.
