Hyderabad:
Hyderabad Metro officials on Sunday studied the feasibility of combining the Paradise-Medchal and JBS-Shamirpet Metro corridors at Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) before splitting them into separate routes.
As several engineering challenges might arise, including the need to construct multiple underground tunnels, near the Begumpet airport boundary wall, the Metro officials have said JBS was chosen as an alternative instead of Paradise as another junction station for the corridor towards Medchal.
"The decision to realign through JBS came after careful consideration of multiple engineering challenges, particularly those associated with the Begumpet airport runway," HAML managing director NVS Reddy said during an inspection of some road stretches in Secunderabad. "The original alignment would have required complex underground tunnelling for about 600 metres along with the already proposed elevated corridor which goes underground here," he added.
To mitigate this, multiple routes in Secunderabad Cantonment were studied to determine the optimal alignment that would minimise acquisition of properties and avoid steep curves while serving maximum residential areas.
The initial plan to route the Metro through Paradise faced complications due to the steep curvature of the road from Paradise to Bowenpally along the airport boundary. "Transitioning from a double-elevated level to underground and back would have created severe engineering difficulties," Reddy explained.
