The Senior Chamber International (SCI) Palakkad legion has joined hands with the State Motor Vehicle Department to create better road safety awareness among schoolchildren. The programme titled ‘Be a role model’ will be launched on Monday.

State Transport Commissioner C.H. Nagaraju will inaugurate the programme at Vasavi Vidyalaya Senior Secondary at Kinassery, near here, on Monday morning. He will also inaugurate school-level road safety clubs being formed as part of the project.

A message to society

“Through this programme, we are catching them young. By educating the young minds about the importance of road safety, we will be sending a larger message to society,” said P. Premnath, SCI Palakkad legion president.

He said teachers and students alike would be given road safety training, and frequent classes would be organised for members of road safety clubs. They will also be given practical training, he said. “Schools wishing to start road safety clubs on their campuses can contact us at scipkdlegion@gmail.com,” he said.

SCI national president Chithra Kumar, while inaugurating a family gathering at Malampuzha, near here, on Saturday, called upon the people to reach out to society positively. He also gave away aid to the residents of Poly Garden rehabilitation centre at Lakkidi.

Mr. Kumar also felicitated Deepa Jayaprakash, Principal of Vasavi Vidyalaya, which won a national recognition in senior secondary category recently.

Mr. Premnath presided over the function. SCI national vice president K. Muraleedharan, national secretary general Rajesh Vaibhav, former national president B. Jayarajan, national coordinator A. Mohammed Ibrahim, and former president G. Jayachandran spoke.
