However, other individuals were earlier detained for interrogation, some of who were also reported to have been the accused in the case. However, later it came to the fore that the detained individuals were not the attackers.
The police analysed a number of CCTV footage to track the main accused, including at the actor’s residence, and train stations.
Confusion Over Attacker’s Arrest
A day after Saif Ali Khan was attacked, the police held an individual and brought him to the Bandra Police Station. However, he was let go as the police found he had no links with the case. He was detained as he resembled the accused captured on the CCTV footage of Saif’s building, according to reports.
On Saturday, a 31-year-old man, Aakash Kanojia, was detained from a train in Chhattisgarh’s Durg in connection with the attack case. The police earlier said that he was a suspect and not an accused. According to the RPF, the man was travelling in the Jnaneswari Express.
At 12.24 pm, an RPF personnel at the Durg railway station received a tip-off from the Juhu police station that the suspect was travelling in the train.
When the train arrived, the suspect was found sitting in the general coach. His photo was sent to the Mumbai Police which then confirmed him as a suspect.
He had a criminal record in his name and also had similar features to the individual caught in the CCTV footage in Saif’s building, the police said.
Main Accused Caught
The main accused was finally arrested from Thane in the early hours of Sunday after nearly 70 hours of manhunt. Multiple teams were on the job to nab him in different parts of the state.
Shariful Islam, the attacker, did not possess any Indian documents which is why the police suspected that he may be a Bangladeshi national. The police are investigating if he is an Indian national or a Bangladeshi.
