The Belagavi police have registered a case against 12 persons of a family for forcibly marrying off a minor girl from a tribal community as her parents had failed to repay a loan.

Acting on the girl’s complaint, the police filed a First Information Report against Vishal Dhawali who married her, his mother Renuka, his father Pundalik, his brother Shyam, and eight unidentified persons.

The victim’s mother had taken a loan of ₹50,000 from the family of the accused by pledging gold ornaments. When they were unable to repay it, Vishal insisted on marrying the girl. Around seven to eight persons took the girl from one town to another and got her married without her consent. Her relatives were not invited. The incident occurred in September 2024.

The FIR lists offences under various provisions of POCSO, and The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. All legal measures are being taken, the police said.
