Revamped take-home ration scheme launched in West Singhbhum
Jamshedpur: The women, child development and social security department on Saturday launched the revamped Shishu Shakti Take Home Ration (THR) initiative on a pilot basis in West Singhbhum district.
State transport minister Deepak Birua handed over the THR kits to 10 beneficiaries in Chakradharpur.
The revamped Shishu Shakti (a food packet), designed for severely malnourished children aged 6 months to 6 years, is denser in energy, protein, and micronutrients. It is made from locally available grains, pulses, nuts, and millets. It is formulated to give better results when provided in age-appropriate quantities to severely malnourished children, officials said.
Based on the results of this pilot project, it will be scaled up across the state. The move is following the recommendation of the THR committee constituted under the chairmanship of the director general, Jharkhand State Nutrition Mission, with the technical support of Unicef and the state Centre of Excellence (RIMS).
The department of child and women development at present provides supplementary nutrition to more than 11 lakh beneficiaries through 38,523 anganwadi centres every month. Hot cooked meals are served daily for children aged 3 to 6 years across anganwadi centres, and state govt has recently added eggs to the menu.
