Kangana Ranaut touches Sadhguru’s feet at Emergency screening; protests in Punjab halt the film’s release in theaters.

Kangana Ranaut made a heartfelt gesture as she welcomed spiritual leader Sadhguru to a special screening of her latest film Emergency in Mumbai on Friday. While the Mumbai screening was a serene and celebratory affair, Emergency faced significant backlash in Punjab. Protests erupted across the state on the day of its release, leading to multiple theaters canceling screenings of the political drama. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) spearheaded the protests, accusing the film of misrepresentation. SGPC chief secretary Kulwant Singh Manan stated that strong demonstrations outside cinemas forced theater owners to halt the film’s release, a decision welcomed by the SGPC.
Manan said, “The SGPC will not allow this film to be screened in Punjab under any circumstances. If anyone attempts to show the film, the committee will resume its protests." He also criticized the film’s portrayal, calling it misleading and hurtful.
Reacting to the situation, Kangana Ranaut expressed her frustration on X (formerly Twitter). She wrote, “This is complete harassment of art and the artist. From Punjab, many cities are reporting that these people are not allowing Emergency to be screened. I have utmost respect for all religions… This is a complete lie and propaganda to tarnish my image and harm my film #Emergency."
Directed and headlined by Kangana, Emergency chronicles the events during the 1975 Emergency in India, with Kangana portraying former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Despite the controversies, the film has garnered attention for its bold storytelling and performances.
