The Elephant Gate police arrested two men for allegedly cheating a Tiruchi-based businessman to the tune of ₹40 lakh on the pretext of helping him buy gold bars for a low price.

When visiting the Goods and Services Tax Office in Chennai in 2021, M. Praveen, 38, a director of Mangal & Mangal in Tiruchi, became acquainted with Guru Sampathkumar of Mayiladuthurai and his friend Lakshminarayanan. They claimed to work for the Income Tax Department and promised to help him purchase gold bars for a low price. Mr. Praveen visited their office in Elephant Gate in 2021 and paid ₹40 lakh for the gold bars. Not only did they fail to procure the gold but also did not return the money.

Based on a complaint from Mr. Praveen, the police investigated and arrested Guru Sampathkumar and Lakshminarayanan. They had been claiming to be government officials and indulging in fraudulent acts, the police added.
